The expansion of our Danube Women City Guide has been decided 🙂
After Ulm it is Regensburg in Germany, after visiting Vienna we turn to Linz in Upper Austria  – and in Croatia we look in Vukovar for female traces in history and in modern times. The friendly  support of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation enabled us to continue our journey to follow women in the Danube region further on. As the stories about women in Regensburg  already are fixed, in Linz and Vukovar we are still discussing intensively which locations and places of historical and contemporary women traces we will include in our book.

Any suggestions from your side? Don’t hesitate to write us: office@ngo.at

What women like …. https://en.woman.danube-stories.eu/2018/08/17/why-women-like-the-river-danube/ https://en.woman.danube-stories.eu/2018/08/17/why-women-like-the-river-danube/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 16:10:12 +0000 https://en.woman.danube-stories.eu/?p=2293 What do women like when traveling the river Danube? More and more women nowadays are fascinated by traveling the Danube from the source to the mouth. Andrea Steinberger, owner of the Café MANCINI in the small town of Innermanzing, south of Vienna, just came back from a boat trip to the Danube Delta, sharing her impressions with us.

„You want to know what has been the most beautiful experience of my journey along the river Danube? The magnificent nature, the beautiful country side, the dense vegetation, the unique environment of the Danube Delta! I especially liked the bird life of the biosphere reserve, but also the peace and tranquillity there. Will it be possible to preserve the idyll of this estuary? There are so many excursion boats on the way. In any case, that journey on the river Danube was unique for me and I always will remember it with great pleasure.”

On that occasion we learnt a life stories of scientist Mileva Maric Einstein, journalist and first women magazine editor Milica Tomic, humanitarian Marija Trandafil, feminist Savka Subotic, first girl with high-school education Marta Jorgovic, philosopher Anica Savic Rebac, actors Milka Gurgurova and Draga Spasic, ethnographic and pedagogue Jelica Belovic Bernadzikovska, painter and nurse during the wars Nadezda Petrovic, writer Isidora Sekulic and a humanitarian Jelena Kon.

Our guides were students of architecture Dragana Gajic and Teodora Rankov and they met participants of the walk with women history of Novi Sad, stories of those great women and their houses or their endowments.

The participants of the city tour told that, until then, they didn’t know much about those women and their relationships with buildings which they we passed by every day.

In this video you can see how that looked like and walk a little bit with us.

Stefan Zweig, the Jewish author from Vienna, committed suicide in 1942 out of desperation during his exile in Brazil.

In this autobiographic book he wrote about “The World of Yesterday”, about the day-to-day life and the culture of Europe, about the xenophobia he encountered, about values and morality of past times.
The reading of Katja Riemann wowed the audience. a wonderful occasion to think about Europe – the Europe of yesterday, our Europe today and the Europe of tomorrow.

NSSJ contribution to the public discussion regarding the new gender equality law in Serbia https://en.woman.danube-stories.eu/2018/07/09/nssj-contribution-to-the-public-discussion-regarding-the-new-gender-equality-law-in-serbia/ https://en.woman.danube-stories.eu/2018/07/09/nssj-contribution-to-the-public-discussion-regarding-the-new-gender-equality-law-in-serbia/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 12:54:49 +0000 https://en.woman.danube-stories.eu/?p=2055 Years of researches into the deconstruction of editorial policies of the media in Serbia with a lens on the visibility of women in different roles, but mainly in the role of a subject in providing information, have shown that women are not given equal visibility to men.
That means that men are given more chances to speak and to be heard than women. That is the case even in the media contents of public service broadcasts even though national and provincial public broadcasters are required to take care of gender equality, gender-neutral language, women visibility in media and while reporting about women who are victims of a gender based violence, according to Law about public broadcasters (2014).

The NSSJ researches showed that during the election campaign in 2016., a program of the national public broadcaster RTS and provincial public broadcaster RTV, only about 14% of sources were from female candidates. At the same time, in all media fields such as informative, sports, children, educational or entertainment programs, women are presented less than men. For example, in the sports program on RTS which is broadcasted daily, reporting about female sports players is deficient, even during considerable competitions in which our female sports players accomplished great results, did not go beyond 6%. On the other side, about competitions in which men participate is reported extensively, even if their results are subpar.

Women, as a source of information are regarded when the topic of reporting is a part of what is typically considered as a ‘women field’ (culture, education, health care) or a ‘women role’ (for example they talk as a mothers, teachers).  But, even in those reports they do not get beyond 20% as a source of information.

Therefore, this brief review of NSSJ research results shows that the public media sphere (in the digital media as the traditional and even more) is a place of a distinctive gender discrimination towards women as subject and resource of information. Although the fact is that women are even a majority in relevant positions in the media (provincial public broadcaster RTV for example), that did not contribute to a greater women visibility in media and a more gender sensible editorial policy.

Because of that, NSSJ estimates that the new gender equality law must strive to influence that problematic field.

During the public discussion of the script for the new law, this opinion of Novi Sad School of Journalism was sent to the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans’ Affairs and Social Affairs.
